Construction is progressing on the new Ballard Food Bank, but community support is crucial to cover remaining construction costs. The food bank launched the Hope Beyond Hunger campaign aiming to raise $1.7 million to complete the project. Initial funding came from government, philanthropic organizations, and donors, but more is needed.

“The past year has highlighted the critical need for a larger, improved Ballard Food Bank,” stated Jennifer Muzia, Executive Director. “Challenges during the pandemic included addressing increased demand, adapting operations, and ensuring safety for clients, staff, and volunteers. However, our community consistently rallied to support our mission. We are confident in their continued support to help us complete our new home.”

The new facility, located at 1400 NW Leary Way, is near the current location and will serve a broader area, including Licton Springs, Bitter Lake, and up to 145th St, providing food and various services to more North Seattle residents.

Currently, $12.2 million has been raised, representing 88% of the total project cost. The food bank’s current lease expires this fall, emphasizing the urgency for completion.

The 11,000-square-foot building will double the current space, featuring a larger grocery store area, an expanded Community Resource Hub, a community garden, increased storage for programs like Weekend Food for Kids and Home Delivery, and a cafe for visitors.

The expanded Ballard Food Bank will offer increased capacity to serve the growing needs of the community. Its larger space and enhanced resources will allow for more efficient food distribution and provide a wider range of vital services.

The new Community Resource Hub at the Ballard Food Bank will provide crucial support services beyond food assistance, connecting individuals and families with essential resources to address various needs.

The new Ballard Food Bank building will include a dedicated community garden space, promoting fresh food access and fostering community engagement through gardening activities.
