A driver was arrested for DUI at a Taco Bell drive-thru in Hagåtña, Guam, after falling asleep at the wheel. Police responded to reports of a stationary vehicle blocking the drive-thru lane late Saturday night. Upon arrival, officers found Darius Glen Thomas Jr. asleep in his 2013 Toyota Corolla, not wearing a seatbelt. Officers noted signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes, droopy eyelids, and the smell of alcohol.
An open, half-full can of Asahi beer was found on the floorboard near Thomas’ foot. He initially refused a field sobriety test, claiming he was returning from a Christmas party. He eventually complied, exhibiting clear signs of impairment leading to his arrest. A subsequent breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.215%, significantly higher than the legal limit.
A Taco Bell security guard witnessed the incident, reporting that Thomas was slumped over at the menu board with a beer can in hand. The guard attempted to wake Thomas, who then allegedly took a drink from the can before driving to the pick-up window. This firsthand account corroborated the police officers’ observations and further solidified the evidence against Thomas.
Thomas was charged with driving while impaired by alcohol or other substances, driving with a BAC over 0.08, drinking while driving, and possessing an open container in a vehicle. All charges are misdemeanors. The incident highlights the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of responsible alcohol consumption. Law enforcement officials encourage anyone who has been drinking to plan for a safe ride home, utilize ride-sharing services, or designate a sober driver.
