Two pet food companies have recently recalled their dog treat products due to potential Salmonella contamination. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that the contamination risk was identified after third-party testing revealed contamination in related, unreleased batches of the same product. “Salmonella can affect animals eating the product and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” warned the FDA in news releases announcing the recalls.

Hollywood Feed, a popular pet retail chain, has recalled its Carolina Made Chicken Chips due to this potential salmonella risk. The recalled treats were distributed across numerous states and sold online.

Specifically, 400 sixteen-ounce bags of the affected product, marked with lot number 20051324L2 and an expiration date of 11/13/25, are subject to the recall. Customers who purchased these treats should discontinue use and contact Carolina Prime Pet, the manufacturer, for refunds or replacements. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this Dog Food Recall at this time. The company is working diligently with the FDA to ensure all contaminated products are removed from circulation.

Gaines Pet Treats LLC has also issued a voluntary dog food recall for its Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips. The recall affects 204 five-ounce bags with lot number 20061124 and an expiration date of 12/11/25. These treats were distributed to independent pet retailers in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, as well as through online retailers.

Gaines is urging consumers to discontinue use of the recalled product and contact them for refunds or replacements. Similar to the Hollywood Feed recall, no illnesses related to the Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips have been reported. The FDA is actively monitoring the situation to mitigate any further risks to pets or their owners. This proactive approach to dog food safety demonstrates a commitment to consumer well-being.

Pet owners should be aware of the symptoms of Salmonella infection in dogs, which can include lethargy, diarrhea (potentially bloody), fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. If a dog exhibits these symptoms after consuming recalled treats, veterinary attention should be sought immediately. Even seemingly healthy pets can carry Salmonella and pose a risk to humans and other animals. Humans infected with Salmonella may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. In rare cases, more severe complications can arise. Consult a healthcare provider if you experience these symptoms after handling potentially contaminated pet food. This dog food recall underscores the importance of vigilance in pet food safety.
