Blue Ridge Beef has issued a voluntary recall of its 2 lb Natural Mix dog food logs due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall was announced on January 31st, following positive salmonella tests conducted by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture Food and Drug Protection Laboratory. The affected product was distributed in retail stores across several states as a meal base, supplement, or topper for dogs.
The recalled dog food is packaged in a transparent, log-shaped container and contains beef, green tripe, beef heart, and beef liver. The product has a lot number of N25/12/31 stamped on the end of the package and a UPC of 854298001054. The affected dog food was sold between January 3rd and January 24th, 2025 and should be stored frozen until use, then thawed in the refrigerator before feeding.
Approximately 5,700 pounds of the Natural Mix dog food are being recalled, impacting over 25% of the states where the product is sold. The affected states include Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, and Rhode Island. Dog owners who purchased the recalled product between the specified dates are urged to check the lot number and UPC to confirm if their purchase is affected.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that both dogs and humans are at risk of salmonella infection from the recalled dog food. Pet owners may have come into contact with the bacteria while handling the food, especially if they did not wash their hands thoroughly afterward.
Salmonella infection in humans can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (potentially bloody), abdominal cramps, and fever. In rare cases, more serious complications can arise. Individuals experiencing these symptoms after contact with the recalled dog food should seek medical attention.
Dogs infected with salmonella may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea (potentially bloody), fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. If a dog displays any of these symptoms, pet owners should contact a veterinarian immediately. Healthy pets can also carry and spread salmonella to other animals or humans.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled Blue Ridge Beef Natural Mix dog food should return it to the place of purchase for a refund or dispose of it safely in a manner that prevents access by children, pets, and wildlife. Do not attempt to feed the recalled product to your dog.
