Food Bazaar Supermarket, a leading grocery chain in the Tri-State area, recently concluded its “Free Throws for Meals” program in partnership with St. John’s University Athletics. This initiative, now in its third year, underscores Food Bazaar’s commitment to combating food insecurity and supporting local communities. For every free throw made by the St. John’s men’s and women’s basketball teams during the past season, Food Bazaar donated $10 worth of food to local charities.

Food Bazaar’s Generosity Makes a Significant Impact

The men’s team sunk 390 free throws, resulting in a $3,900 food donation to St. John’s Bread & Life in Brooklyn. The women’s team contributed 335 free throws, generating a $3,350 donation for the Allen Women’s Resource Center in Queens. Demonstrating their dedication further, Food Bazaar generously increased their total donation to $10,000 for each organization, significantly amplifying their impact.

Partnering to Address Food Insecurity and Domestic Violence

St. John’s Bread & Life, a prominent emergency food provider in New York City, distributes millions of meals annually through various programs, including on-site pantries, mobile soup kitchens, and grab-and-go meals. They serve a diverse population facing food insecurity, offering crucial support to low-wage earners, individuals at or below the poverty line, the elderly, and those experiencing homelessness.

The Allen Women’s Resource Center provides shelter and comprehensive support services to adults and children affected by domestic violence. Their mission focuses on empowering survivors through counseling, advocacy, and assistance with medical, housing, and other essential needs.

Food Bazaar: A Community-Focused Supermarket

Kevin Waters, General Manager of St. John’s Sports Properties, praised Food Bazaar as a valuable community partner, highlighting their expanded support for the women’s basketball program. Sr. Caroline Tweedy, RSM, Executive Director of St. John’s Bread & Life, expressed gratitude for the partnership’s role in combating food insecurity, enabling the organization to provide nutritious meals with dignity and compassion.

Donna Atmore-Dolly, Executive Director of the Allen Women’s Resource Center, emphasized the profound impact of Food Bazaar’s donation on the shelter’s residents, providing essential food assistance to mothers and children in need. Suzanne Kuczun, Associate VP of Marketing & Development for Food Bazaar, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting organizations that uplift communities and provide vital services. Food Bazaar’s “Free Throws for Meals” program exemplifies the positive impact businesses can have when they actively engage in addressing local needs.
