A planned Texas trip was abandoned, leading to a delightful exploration of New Orleans Food And Spirits closer to home. The decision to stay local stemmed from a disagreement on travel styles and destinations, with a preference for luxury accommodations and a shorter, more relaxing journey prevailing. This change of plans allowed for an immersive experience in the local culinary scene.

Lunch was enjoyed at New Orleans Food and Spirits in Covington. Despite the summer heat and a potentially overwhelmed air conditioning system, the restaurant provided a comfortable setting for a classic New Orleans meal. The menu selections included a half-muffuletta with gumbo, a burger, and a pecan catfish dish. The generous portion of catfish, complemented by a flavorful sauce, offered excellent value.

Dinner that evening continued the New Orleans food and spirits theme with a visit to the Acme Oyster House, also in Covington. This popular establishment offered a wide array of classic dishes, highlighting the fresh seafood for which the region is renowned.

The meal included small, yet flavorful Texas oysters, enjoyed with garlic butter, stuffed oyster soup, a wedge salad with blue cheese, fried oysters with remoulade, and red beans. The presence of speckled trout on the menu, a rarity in recent decades, further showcased the restaurant’s commitment to providing a diverse selection of fresh seafood. The double order of red beans in a single day solidified the family’s appreciation for traditional New Orleans cuisine. Interestingly, the Acme showed no signs of the seafood supply issues plaguing other restaurants.
