Variety of cat food options available.
Our Cat Food Database allows you to explore reviews by brand, breed, food type, health condition, and sensitivities. You can also sort reviews alphabetically or by our quality score. We identify brands available in the US and UK and indicate which ones have undergone lab review. We provide helpful guides for choosing the best cat food in America, Canada, the UK, and Australia.
Our rating system, the Cats.com Standard, evaluates cat food brands across six equally weighted criteria: species appropriateness, ingredient quality, product variety, price, customer experience, and recall history. Each brand receives a score from 1 to 10 in each category, resulting in a total score between 6 and 60.
Species appropriateness assesses how closely a food’s nutritional profile aligns with a cat’s natural carnivorous diet. Ingredient quality considers the safety and digestibility of ingredients, prioritizing human-grade options and penalizing the use of by-products and artificial additives.
Product variety considers the range of protein sources, options for different health needs, and texture variations. A brand offering a diverse selection of high-quality foods will score higher than one with limited options.
Price compares a brand’s daily feeding cost to similar products, rewarding those that offer high quality at a reasonable price. Customer experience takes into account online reviews, forum discussions, media mentions, and direct interactions with the company to gauge customer satisfaction and brand reputation. Recall history examines the frequency, severity, and company response to past recalls, with brands that have never been recalled receiving the highest scores.
Based on the total score, each brand receives a letter grade from A to F. Brands earning A to A- grades are highly recommended due to their superior nutrition, positive customer experience, high-quality ingredients, and often spotless recall history. Brands with B+ to C grades may offer good products but require more careful consideration. Brands graded C- or lower often exhibit issues like quality control problems, low-value ingredients, or a concerning recall history. We strive to be your trusted cat food advisor, simplifying the complex process of comparing different brands and helping you make the best choice for your cat.
